Team: Sexual Chocolate/ Admirals Ultimate (Head Coach)/ Dirty South
Ultimate
Address: Paranaque, Metro
Manila
1. How did your ultimate career start? Do you have any idols or
heroes?
Ping: I first bumped into ultimate after my first year in college. I was
driving around the village and I swung by the park and saw a bunch of guys
tossing a disc one night. After that, I've been an addict to it ever since. I
don't really have and idols or heroes in ultimate but I do support and promote
all our National Team Representatives in International Tournaments (both on
beach and grass).
2. What is your sports background and how did those skills transition into
ultimate?
Ping: In high school I played in three different varsities (baseball,
basketball and track and field). In the team sports (baseball and basketball) I
learned the importance of trusting and knowing your teammates properly
as well as listening to your coach. In individual sports
(track and field) I learned the importance of focusing at the
task at hand.
3. What is your life outside ultimate like? Do you have any hobbies or
interests?
Ping: Ultimate IS my life. I quit the corporate rat race and I coach Ultimate
full time in my alma mater, Southridge. I also hold clinics and classes for
other clubs and coaches. At the same time I am currently the President of the
Philippine Ultimate Association and also the Tournament Director of Metro
Manila Ultimate Commission and sit on the Nationals Committee Board. I also
started a small company called Boondox Ultimate Sports Gear, that sell ultimate
merchandise and also a catering company, Chori Boi, which sells food to hungry
ultimate players during leagues and tournaments. Apart from playing
ultimate, some of my other interests are photography and playing poker (either
cash games or tournaments).
4. Every player has a different 'style' of play...what is yours?
Ping: My "style" of play is to be able to apply Spirit of the Game
at all times and in doing so achieve the primary goal of my team for the
league.
5. What is your primary position? Are you comfortable with it or you want
to try different position?
Ping: I usually play handler in an offensive line. I am comfortable with it
but I am always trying become a better player and learning new skills.
6. Have there been individuals that have been major contributors to the
growth of your Ultimate career?
Ping: I look up to and still ask for advice from a lot of my previous coaches
and mentors when it comes to both the rules of the game, how to run a tournament
or league and the proper practice to SOTG. A few names I could mention are
Alvin Ang, Bart Edes, Wendell Simbullan, Jude Lee, Dale
Hutchinson, Rob "Pink Daddy" Locke, Ben Wiggins and Greg
"Scoops" Conelley.
7. What do you prefer, Beach or Grass? Why?
Ping: I prefer grass more than beach because I play more on grass and not as
often on beach.
8. What’s your plan now? Do you plan to stay involved in ultimate and want
to raise your game? What skills would you like to improve?
Ping: I plan on being a part of the growth of Ultimate in the Philippines and
in South East Asia. Ultimate has been one of the best things to ever happen to
me and I owe a lot to it. You'll definitely be seeing me more often from now
on. I would like to work on my skills as a coach and help with the growth of
the sport in the youth. Especially in high school and grade school.
